Her work has appeared in Callaloo, Nimrod, Barrow Street, Frogpond, African American Review, and elsewhere. She earned her MFA at Queens University of Charlotte and lives in Durham, NC. She teaches Creative Writing, English Composition, and Literature.

Shannon is author of the poetry chapbook, Blood Creek (Longleaf Press, 2013). A recipient of the Foley Poetry Award, the White Oak Kitchen Prize in Southern Poetry, and the Nazim Hikmet Poetry Prize, Ward has also been a resident fellow at Yaddo, Norton Island, Brush Creek Ranch, and the Anderson Center. She received an MFA in Poetry from North Carolina State University in 2009. Shannon was raised in a renovated slaughterhouse on the outskirts of Wilmington, Ohio.
